Classes Offered:
GED Classes: These classes will be taught in a two part section, one using the GED software on the
computer (the computer lab will have the GED software installed on each computer) and one in the classroom setting for hands
on demonstrations. Each class will be used to prepare students to take the GED high school equivalency exam. These classes
will help the students score high in all five-test categories (English, Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies). The curriculum
used will be materials by McGraw and Hill, which will include targeted assessments, easy-to-follow instructions, hundreds
of reinforcement activities, and simulated GED tests for each subject area. The students will be given a book to use while
in class, and a fee of 10 dollars will be charged for each book, but will be refundable at the end of the class to be used
towards GED testing fees. We will work in accordance with the school district to assure our students are using the latest
testing materials as well as to assure our students will be included when the GED test is being offered. Classes are offered
currently at night for those students working in the day time and to accommodate other inconveniences with time, however we
will consider day classes at a later date. We will also offer transportation and childcare.
Computer Classes - These classes will be offered
to all, teaching students the basic computer knowledge to perform light to normal office duties. The classes will be held
in the computer lab and will go through a series of sessions including getting to know your keyboard, basic typing skills,
as well as basic knowledge of all of the Microsoft Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc). The students will also be tested
on their speed of typing in an effort to help with typing speed, as well as a basic computer knowledge test, given at the
end of their term. All students will receive a certificate at the end of the class term.
Art Classes: - Art Classes will be offered to adults in the day, Monday through Friday and offered
to students ages 9 15 on the weekends. The art instructor will do various activities with the students, including sculptures,
drawings, painting, crocheting etc; these classes are offered as an extra-curriculum class for those looking for a hobby or
for those looking to enhance their cultural awareness.
Music Classes: - Music classes offer minimal knowledge of songwriting: beginning and continuing,
Getting the most out of your voice , learning to read music , Piano for adult beginners String skills & ensemble for adults:
beginning/elementary , West African Drumming, etc;
ROPES courses / Behavioral Science classes: - These classes are designed for at-risk youths, targeting
young males ages 10 16 who need one on one and group interaction on the teaches of behavioral science. The courses will discuss
such topics as Team Work, Responsibility, Respecting Ourselves, as well as others, Transitions (boys to men), etc, it will
teach the young men how to deal with different aspects of life, as well as how to deal with confrontation and other areas
of life that without being hostile and aggressive.
Parenting Classes and Workshops Parenting classes and workshops will be offered to all parents.
These classes/workshops will discuss various topics such as Sibling Rivalry, New Parents, Feeding Infants, Child Development,
Test Taking for Children, Parents Involvement in Their Childs Education, etc. These classes/workshops will be PACT (Parent
and Child Together) sessions where the parent and the child together, will interact and participate in all activities. The
classes will include book reading session where the class/workshop instructor will read a book to the class and after the
book reading, the parents will do an activity about the book with their child and then each parent will get a book to keep
and take home to read to their children. Workshops will also include Guest Speakers, Door Prizes and Referral information.
We will also offer Teen Pregnancy classes at night, for teen-aged moms or teenaged moms to be.
Parent Home Visitation Program (Home Visits): The Case Manager will recruit and target families
with children Birth to Five. After the families have been identified, the case manager will go in the home and work with the
parent on areas of early childhood parent education and offer referrals for family support. This program will serve families
throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten. The program is designed to enhance child development and school
achievement through parent education accessible to all families. The materials used will be from the Parents As Teachers workshop
trainings. The training prepares the case manager to be a parent educator, and will train the case manager to do:
Personal Visits - sharing age-appropriate child development information with parents, help them
learn to observe their own child, addressing their parenting concerns, and engaging the family in activities that provide
meaningful parent/child interaction.
Group Parent Meetings - group meetings provide opportunities to share information about parenting
issues and child development. Parents learn from and support each other, observe their children with other children and practice
parenting skills. Screenings Periodic developmental, health, vision and hearing screening provides for early identification
of developmental delays and health, vision and hearing problems. Regular review of each child's developmental progress identifies
strengths and abilities as well as areas of concern that require referral for follow-up services, and increases parents' understanding
of their child's development.
Referral Services - Parent Educators will refer parents to resource network agencies by helping
families identify and connect with needed resources and overcome barriers to accessing services. Programs take an active role
in establishing ongoing collaborative relationships with other organizations that serve families.
Lending Library: The lending library will be a lending facility for parents to come and check out
books and other materials to take home to use with their children. The materials will be on loan to families for a week and
will have to be returned after that time. All materials will be on a computerized coding system that will allow us to track
and keep inventory on the materials. The facility will only be open to check items out, there will not be an area to sit and
lounge. Staff will be available in the lending library from 9 to 7 pm.
After-School Program - The after-school program will either be a collaboration with the local school
district, or we will offer it. The children attending will be children from the nearby schools and if we are not working in
accordance with the school district, they will be children, who for some reason, are not enrolled in their schools after school
program. The children will be bussed from their schools to the center, and again, if we cannot work out an arrangement for
the children to be dropped off by the school buses from the nearby schools, we will provide transportation to the facility
ONLY. Parents will be responsible for making arrangements to pick up their own children. The after school program will began
at 3:00 pm and end at 6:30 pm. It will consist of the following schedule :
Homework Session - 3:00 to 4:15 (if the children do not have homework or if they have finished their work
before getting to the center, age appropriate material will be supplied)
Snack - 4:20 to 4:35 pm
Clean Up / Pack Up Time - 4:40 4:30, the students will clean up their area and pack their book-bags and
belongings
Sports and Recreation - 4:35 5:50 (the coach will offer outside activities and for those who wish to stay
inside, they will have the option of playing board games or drawing,
Movie / Wind Down Time - 5:55 6:30 the students will come in and watch a movie until their parents come
to pick them up.
* Other activities offered: Holiday workshops including hands on activities, field trips and other activities
to enhance the childrens group participation.
Community and Participant Activities:
Family Night - One night a month will be family night, we will have games and other activities for
parents and their families to come and participate in.
Grandparents Week - September is Grandparents month and will celebrate it by doing a variety of
activities for grandparents.
Spirit Week - This will be a week of spirit when the staff and participants will have the choice
to participate in a variety of spirit activities for example, for Team day, the will wear their favorite team wear, etc; A
rally will be held on the last day of the week.
Youth Week - This will be in the summer, the youths that are a part of the center will participate
in a week of field trips, the last day of the week will be FUN DAY, where everyone, the staff, participants and family members
will come out and enjoy a day of fun with games and other activities.
Summer Camp - A group of students will go on a trip to a campground for a week of summer camp.
Step Team - This course will teach children about the heritage of African American Sororities and
Fraternities. The children will learn how to rhythmically step to music. This is an extra-curriculum activity.
Sports and Recreation - The center will have a gym area that will be open from 9 to 7 pm Monday
through Friday and open on Saturdays for the Basketball Team practice. ( A basketball team for young male students will be
developed. This team will compete with other basketball teams in the area. This is a projection, therefore no more details
are offered as this time An outside basketball court is also an projection for the neighborhood children and families to come
and use when the center is open or closed).
